OARC’s Rising Star Talent Search

Beginning in November 2009, OARC will sponsor the second season of The Rising Star Talent Search, a competition designed to give up-and-coming musicians and singers from the Greater Philadelphia region a chance to perform, gain exposure, and showcase their talent for the general public. The event will be held at Relish, 7152 Ogontz Avenue in Philadelphia, and will be a series of performances with participants competing against each other. One talented group or individual will ultimately be declared the winner.  The winner of The Rising Star Talent Search will perform at the 2010 West Oak Lane Jazz and Arts Festival, and receive a $5,000 grand prize.

Contest Details and Rules
Musicians and singers interested in competing will be scheduled for an audition. Auditions will begin in October 2009. To schedule an audition, please contact Tyrone Holland, Program Director at 215-927-5455, or by email at tholland@oarcphilly.org. To be eligible to compete, musicians and singers may not have any current recording or talent management agreements, i.e., no professionals!  Contestants taking part in The Rising Star Talent Search will not receive any form of compensation. Acts will not be paid to perform during any phase of the competition. The musical categories for the competition will be R&B, Blues, and Jazz. Contestants will be selected at the sole discretion of the Program Director. Contestants will be scheduled to perform in the order they are selected. The preliminary competitions will take place over a period of five months.

The Talent Search will begin Wednesday, November 4, 2009. Up to four contestants will compete each night, performing for 15-20 minutes each. All contestants must be at least age 18--NO EXCEPTIONS! During each of the Talent Search competitions, the audience (age 21+ only) will participate in the voting process, along with a panel of judges.  Using ballots, each customer in the audience will vote for his or her favorite performer. The performer receiving the most votes from the audience will receive one vote. The judges will cast one vote each. The performer receiving the most votes will be declared the winner of the competition, and will move into the semi-final round of the Talent Search. In the event of a tie, the panel of judges will agree on the winner.  Once 20 semi-finalists are chosen, they will compete in four groups of five people each. One finalist will be chosen from each group, and the four finalists will move into the final round of the competition. One winner will be chosen from the four finalists.

Musicians and singers interested in competing will be asked to provide a bio/resume, and may also submit their own CD (optional). Auditions may be required. To be eligible to compete, musicians and singers may not have any current recording or talent management agreements, i.e., no professionals!

None of the contestants taking part in the Rising Star Talent Search will receive any form of compensation.  Acts will not be paid to perform during any phase of the competition.

The musical categories for the competition will be R&B, Blues, and Jazz.  Contestants will be selected at the sole discretion of OARC and/or its designated representatives.  During each phase of the competition, Relish Restaurant customers will cast their votes for the winners.
